PRIMM, Nev. - The Ohio wrestling team took part in the 25th annual Cliff Keen Invitational Friday, an event featuring wrestlers from 47 different schools. Three Ohio wrestlers posted 2-2 records on the day in the double-elimination event.
Three different Bobcats posted wins in their first match of the event to propel them to the second round of the championship bracket. Freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio), wrestling at 165 pounds, posted a 10-2, major decision win over Cumberland's Trey Meyers in the first round but suffered a loss in the second round to drop him to the consolation bracket. Ison posted a pin of Embry Riddle's Joe Dennison in 5:16 to open his consolation action, but fell in his next match by a score of 7-4 to end his day. Ison's pin was his second of the season as he moved to 10-5 overall in his debut season.
Sophomore Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) also earned a win in his first match, defeating George Mason's Harry Zander 8-4. After a loss to top-seeded Jerry Rinaldi in the second round, Reichard advanced in the consolation bracket with an 8-3 win over Pennsylvania's Jack Penn. Reichard lost a close, 4-1 decision to Buffalo's Ricky Scott to exit him from the tournament. Reichard is now 5-4 so far this season.
Senior Matt Smith (Sandyville, W.Va.) earned a win in the first round of the 133-pound championship bracket. Smith earned an 8-0, major decision victory over Utah Valley's Alex Smith before enduring back-to-back losses to end his event.
Senior Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) did not earn a win in the first round of the 165-pound bracket, but finished 2-2 on the day with back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket. After an impressive technical fall win over Cornell's Matt Panasevich, Terbay earned a 6-0 decision over Boise State's Mike Casperson before exiting the event with a loss.
Sophomore Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) was the only other Bobcat to record a win on the day. Madsen fell in the first round but earned a pin of Columbia's Derek Francavilla in 5:52 before his second loss of the event. The pin was Madsen's first of the season.
The Bobcats will be back in action next weekend when they kick off Mid-American Conference action with a dual meet against Eastern Michigan. The event will be Ohio's first home event of the season, with a 7:00 p.m. start time at the Convocation Center.
