RENO, Nev. - The Ohio University wrestling team placed fourth among 26 teams at the 2013 Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
Senior Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and sophomore Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) led the way for the Bobcats as they both claimed individual tournament titles in the 285 and 197 weight classes.
Johnson opened his championship run by defeating Peter Angiuano (Grand Canyon) by a major decision. He then scored a fall in 1:09 versus Arjun Gill to move on to the quarterfinal round.
Johnson then tallied a pair of major decisions over Spencer Empey (Cal Poly) and Zach Merril (Unattached) to advance to the championship round against Oregon State's Amar Dhesi. In the championship round, Johnson defeated Dhesi 5-3.
Wellington's winning march began following a 8-0 major decision over Wesley Moore (Arizona State). He then recorded a fall at 1:29 over Toby Cheff (Montana State Northern) to advance to the quarterfinal.
During championship rounds, Wellington earned a pair of decisions against Scottie Boykin (Tennessee Chattanooga) and Dan Scherer (Stanford) to earn a spot in the championship final.
In the championship bout, Wellington posted a 9-1 major decision over Austin Schaffer (Unattached).
Freshman Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) also chipped in as he placed fifth.
Ohio returns to action on Jan. 1 as it heads to the 2014 Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
