CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Ohio University wrestlers fell to 8-5 on the season with their 30-6 defeat at the hands of No. 25 Cleveland State on Saturday evening in Northeast Ohio. The Bobcats will look to rebound as they return to Athens for a 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon Mid-American Conference showdown with No. 18 Central Michigan (10-3, 2-1 MAC). Complete results to follow.
In what was a tough night all in all for the team, two Bobcats recorded individual triumphs at Woodling Gymnasium. Junior Paul Hodermarsky (Olmsted) won his sixth consecutive match with a 4-2 decision over the Vikings’ Matt Depolo. For the Ohio 141-pounder, it marked the 12th victory of the season against nine losses. He now stands just two wins shy of his 30rd collegiate decision with an overall record of 28-37.
Fellow junior Robert Lyons (West Chester) became the 10th team member to reach double digits in wins on the year with his 5-0 shut out of CSU’s Josh Ging. Lyons, a transfer from Neo Sheo Community College, has posted a 10-13 mark thus far in 2002-03 at 157 pounds.
All told, four of the 10 bouts on the night were decided by two points or less as the Vikings (11-5) ended the ‘Cats three-meet win streak. The best finish of those came in sudden death at 165 pounds, as senior Luke Moore (Springfield) matched up with Jason Effner. Moore (25-9), who has recorded the most wins (93) among all active Ohio wrestlers, lost in the overtime period due to a a one-point stalling infraction. Heavyweight Jeremiah Beltran (Olathe, Kan.) lost for just the second time in nine trips to the mat as a sophomore, a closely contested 3-2 decision to Russ Davie.
Ohio (8-5, 1-1 MAC) will attempt to get back on the winning track with a crucial Convocation Center meet on Sunday against Central Michigan. The Bobcats fell to the Chippewas in 2002, 23-9 in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Start time for that afternoon affair is slated for 2 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
