ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio wrestling team will take part in its final non-conference dual meet of the season Friday, when the Bobcats take on West Virginia at 7:00 p.m. from Morgantown, W.Va. Ohio (15-6, 2-1) is looking for its 16th win of the season, which would be the most by the Bobcats under Head Coach Joel Greenlee. Greenlee also led Ohio to 15 wins in the 1999-2000 season, his third as the Bobcat head coach, when the team finished 15-5-1 in dual meets. Greenlee has three chances left to eclipse the 15-win mark this season. The Bobcats are currently riding a three-meet win streak as they have taken down Buffalo, Ashland and Virginia in their last three meets. Ohio was most recently in action last Saturday, when the Bobcats defeated Division II Ashland 24-14 and ACC member Virginia 18-12 at the Ohio triangular in Athens. The pair of wins marked a vast improvement over last season, when Ohio fell to both Ashland and Virginia. Prior to the Ohio triangular, the Bobcats won a home dual meet against Mid-American Conference rival Buffalo on Jan. 27. The Bobcats defeated the Bulls by a convincing score of 25-9 after Buffalo had defeated Ohio by the same score the previous season. West Virginia (3-3, 2-1) will present a tough task for the Bobcats after an upset of No. 25 Pittsburgh on Feb. 2. The Mountaineers trailed 16-15 heading into the final match but a heavyweight win from Dustin Rogers led to an 18-16 West Virginia win. The Mountaineers received votes in the latest USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll. The Mountaineers have seen action in only six dual meets this season, defeating Pittsburgh (18-16), Duquesne (37-7) and Clarion (38-6) and falling to Northwestern (28-14), Penn (25-18) and Bloomsburg (22-15). Northwestern and Penn are both ranked 16th or higher nationally.
Previewing the Weight Classes 133: Sophomore Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio), ranked second in the MAC, went 2-0 at the Ohio triangular and earned MAC Wrestler of the Week honors in doing so. Jackson defeated Eric Albright, who entered the meet ranked 16th in the country at 133 pounds, in Ohio's win against Virginia. Jackson is now 11-6 this season. Freshman Mark Anderson is the probable for the Mountaineers. He is 8-12 in his rookie campaign. 141: Sophomore Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) saw his five-match win streak come to an end with a pair of losses last weekend. He looks to get a new streak started and move his record above .500 as he is 7-7 this year. Madsen will have his hands full with 11th-ranked Brandon Rader. Rader is 15-1 on the season in his sophomore season with West Virginia. 149: Redshirt freshman Clay Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) earned a 5-1 win over Virginia's Drew DiPasquale last Saturday and looks for another win against the Mountaineers. Tucker is 8-16 this season. Tucker will likely face West Virginia's David Jauregui. Jauregui is 14-3 this season. 157: Sophomore Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio) is ranked third in the MAC at 157. He has won his last three matches and five of the last six. Frerichs went 2-0 at the Ohio triangular to move to 14-6 on the year. He has yet to be pinned on the year and has recorded four pins of his own. Jake Fryling is the likely starter for the Mountaineers. He is 15-5 this season in his junior campaign. 165: Redshirt freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) continues his dominant season at 165. Ison won both of his matches last Saturday and recorded his ninth pin of the season in the process. He is now 27-9 on the year and has not been pinned by an opponent. West Virginia will send Eric Connolly against Ison. The junior is 6-8 for the year. 174: Junior Antione Love (Gahanna, Ohio) or junior Ryan Knapp (McConnelsville, Ohio) could get the start for the Bobcats at 174. Love wrestled to a major decision loss against Ashland while Knapp fell 5-2 to Virginia at the Ohio Triangular. Love is 20-6 on the year while Knapp is 2-3 wrestling at three different weight classes. Kurt Brenner is the probable for the Mountaineers and is 4-2 on the season. 184: Senior Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) or junior Adam Faires (Glouster, Ohio) could see time Friday against the Mountaineers. Both went 0-1 at the Ohio triangular. Terbay is 8-13 on the year while Faires is 3-3 overall and 1-1 at 184 pounds. Chance Litton will get the go for the Mountaineers with a 14-10 record. 197: Sophomore Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) was a perfect 2-0 last Saturday and looks to extend his three-match win streak Friday. Reichard is 19-11 overall and 6-1 in matches decided by a pin. Reichard faces a tough draw in West Virginia's Jared Villers. Villers is ranked 18th in the country at 197 pounds with a 19-5 record. HWT: Senior Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) has been on a roll for more than a month as he is 10-1 in the 2007 calendar year. Adelman went 2-0 last weekend and secured Ohio's win over Virginia with a 5-1 decision of Virginia's Scott Smith in the final match of the meet. He is 17-8 on the season. Adelman will battle Dustin Rogers. Rogers is 13-3 in his senior season. The Bobcats and Mountaineers will hit the mat Friday at 7:00 p.m. |
