ATHENS, Ohio - While the Ohio men's wrestling team wrapped up its regular season last weekend at No. 4 ranked Central Michigan, there was another Ohio wrestling team that completed its season as well.

The Ohio redshirt wrestlers, freshmen that wrestled unattached at various tournaments to retain their full four-year eligibility for next year, tallied a 91-55 record in eight tournaments, including a pair of first place finishes last weekend at the Ashland University Eagle Open.

Tommy Weinkam (Cincinnati, Ohio) took first place at 165 pounds and had just one point scored against him in his three consecutive victories. Weinkam, who compiled a 16-5 record this season - the best amongst redshirts, earned a 12-1 major decision in the first round, a 1:40 pin in the second round and an 8-0 decision in the championship.

Matt Reedy (Hiram, Ohio) also took home a first place finish at the Eagle Open, knocking off four competitors to claim his gold. Reedy defeated his first round opponent on a 15-0 technical fall, won in the second round with a 6-4 decision, defeated the No. 1 seed in the third round on a 4-2 decision and took the championship with an 11-2 decision against his Bobcat teammate, Michael Fennell (Commack, N.Y.), in the finals.

Fennell's second place finish was one of four Bobcat placewinners, with Darrin Boing (Northfield Center, Ohio) taking fourth at 141 pounds.

It was the fourth time out of seven tournaments that Boing placed. He took fourth at the season-opening Michigan State Open, second place at a Kent State tournament and first at the Cleveland State Open. He put together a 13-7 record during the course of the redshirt season.

While Weinkam's 16-5 record boasted the best winning percentage of all the redshirt wrestlers, Reedy's 19 wins was the most amongst the young Bobcats. Reedy earned places in four tournaments, including his first place at Ashland. He also took fifth at Michigan State, second at Cleveland State and fourth at Kent State. He went 5-1 at Cleveland State and 4-0 in Ashland.

Andy Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) competed at heavyweight while redshirting this season and compiled a 16-10 record in five tournaments. He took fifth place at Cleveland State with a 6-1 record at the tournament. He matched his fifth place showing at Kent State and took sixth at the Edinboro Open.

Weinkam placed in three of the five tournaments he competed in during the course of the redshirt season. He earned a third place finish at Michigan State with a 6-1 record, posted a second place finish at Kent State with a 4-1 record and then went 3-0 to take first at Ashland.

Nick Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) earned two placewinners while compiling a 14-5 record, the second best winning percentage amongst Ohio's redshirt. He went 5-1 to take third place at 174 pounds at the Michigan State Open and tallied a 4-1 record to take third at Kent State.

Other redshirt wrestlers that competed unattached this season included Fennell, Justin Powell (Youngstown, Ohio), Aaron Schecter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio), Gabe Garcia (Toledo, Ohio) and Zach Star (Cincinnati, Ohio). Fennell went 5-5 on the season, Powell competed in just one tournament while battling a knee injury, posting a 1-1 record, Schecter earned a fifth place finish at the Midwest Open and compiled a 5-7 record on the season, Garcia went 1-2 competing only at Cleveland State and Star went 1-6 at three tournaments with his victory coming at Michigan State.

While the redshirt season is complete, the Bobcat wrestling team will finish its season at the MAC Championships on March 7-8 in Kent, Ohio.
