ATHENS, Ohio - Senior Nick Purdue (174) and sophomore Jeremy Johnson (285) will both take the mat tonight to compete for the Mid-American Conference championship in their respective weight classes.
Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) will face off against Eastern Michigan's Phillip Joseph. The two faced off earlier this year at Eastern Michigan. In that match, Purdue earned a 10-1 victory over Joseph.
Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) earned a spot in the championship match at heavyweight following a pin over Eastern Michigan's Wesley Schroeder. Johnson punched his ticket to the final after he pinned Schroeder to give him his 13th pin on the year. He will face Kent State's Brendan Barlow for the heavyweight title. Earlier this season, Johnson narrowly defeated Barlow at home 2-0.
Freshman Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio), redshirt freshman Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) and sophomore Ryan Garringer (Downers Grove, Ill.) are all still in contention and will wrestle for third place at 149, 157 and 184, respectively.
The Bobcats are currently fifth in the team standings with 25.5 points. Central Michigan is first with 50.0 points followed by Kent State (48.0), Northern Illinois (35.0), Eastern Michigan (31.0) and Buffalo, which sits in sixth place.
The final round will begin at 6 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
