Claxton Earns At-Large Bid to the NCAA Championship

ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University junior Tywan Claxton earned an at-large selection at 149 pounds to the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship. He was one of 45 at-large selections that were announced today.

Claxton joins teammates Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio), Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio), Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio), Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) and Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) as participants in the 2014 NCAA Championships.

The Johnson, Wellington, Walters, Hightower and Chino all earned automatic bids to nationals last weekend at the MAC Championships.

Claxton (South Euclid, Ohio) received the at-large selection after he finished the regular season with an overall record of 26-7. He entered the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships as the No. 1 overall seed at 149 pounds.

In addition to the at-large selections, the NCAA also announced the pairings for this year's championships.

Walter, Wellington and Johnson all earned Top 16 seeds in their respective bracket as they were seeded eighth, eighth and 10th, respectively.

Ohio's six qualifiers to the NCAA Championship are the most in head coach Joel Greenlee's tenure in Athens. Over the past two seasons, the Bobcats have sent 11 individuals to the NCAA Championships.
