Wellington and Johnson Advance to NCAA Second Round

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Senior Jeremy Johnson and redshirt sophomore Phil Wellington both tallied first round victories Thursday afternoon at the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The three-day event is being held inside Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) posted a 6-5 decision victory over Harvard's James Fox. With the win, Welllington picked up his 34th on the year. He will faceoff against Cody Reed from Binghampton in the second round.

Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) followed Wellington with a win of his own as he downed American's Blake Herrin to improve to 37-3 on the year. With the win over Herrin, Johnson picked up his 16th-consecutive victory. He will battle Michigan State's Mike McClure in the second round.

Redshirt sophomore Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) nearly advanced to the second round, but dropped a 9-6 decision in tie-breaker one. Walters will face NC State's Pete Renda in the Wrestlebacks.

Junior Tywan Claxton (South Euclid, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) and redshirt junior Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) all dropped their respective first round bouts.

As a team, Ohio is tied for 35th with Air Force, Maryland, Michigan State and Penn.

The second round begins at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday. ESPNU will have the television coverage, while ESPN3 will have separate feeds of all eight mats.
