OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Senior heavyweight Jeremy Johnson highlighted session three competition for the Ohio University wrestling team as he logged a pair of victories to advance to session four of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The three-day event is being held Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) picked up wins over Virginia Tech's Ty Walz and Rutgers' William Smith to advance in the champoionships. The Ohio senior defeated Walz by a 6-2 count then went on to a 6-3 triumph over Smith.
With the wins, Johnson improved to 39-4 on the year and tied former Ohio All-American Jake Percival's all-time record of 141 career victories.
Johnson will faceoff against fourth-seeded Adam Coon from the University of Michigan in the round of 12.
Junior Tywan Claxton (South Euclid, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) all dropped their respective Wrestleback matchups.
Claxton fell in sudden victory two to third-seeded Christopher Villalonga by a count of 4-2. With the loss, Claxton finished the year with a 27-9 mark.
Walters also fell in overtime as he dropped a 2-1 decision in tie-breaker one to Central Michigan's Mike Ottinger.
Wellington was the final Bobcat to fall in session three as he was edged out 5-4 by Cornell's Jace Bennett. Wellington led for the majority of the bout, but Bennett tallied a two-point takedown in the closing moments of the third period to secure the win.
Despite the loss, Wellington finished the year with a career-best 34-5 record.
As a team, Ohio is tied for 39th with Boston University and The Citadel.
