2006-07 Ohio Wrestling Final Release
The 2006-07 season was one of significant accomplishments for the Ohio wrestling team and Head Coach Joel Greenlee. The Bobcats recorded a 16-8 overall record on the season, the most dual meet wins in Greenlee's 10-year coaching career at Ohio. The 16 wins eclipsed Greenlee's 1999-2000 total of 15 dual meet wins, but the Bobcats went just 2-3 in Mid-American Conference dual meets and finished with a fourth-place finish at the MAC Championship. All-in-all, the 2006-07 season was a big step up from Ohio's 11-11 overall record and 1-4 MAC mark the previous year. Individually, Ohio saw several of its wrestlers excel during the 2006-07 campaign. Sophomore Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio) represented the Bobcats at the NCAA Championship in Auburn Hills, Mich. after earning a wildcard birth to the event. Frerichs, who took second place at the MAC Championship at 157 pounds, went 0-2 in national competition but earned valuable experience for his final two seasons with Ohio. The sophomore Bobcat finished the season with a 19-10 overall record and has gone 33-19 in two seasons. He was a perfect 6-0 in matches decided by a pin or major decision. Redshirt freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) had arguably the best season of any Ohio wrestler as he posted a 31-12 record and was named a second alternate for national competition at 165 pounds. Ison claimed third place at the MAC Championship in his first season of varsity competition. He led the Bobcats with 10 pins and was not pinned a single time during the year. Ison was 17-5 in dual meets and 3-2 in MAC competition. Senior Bobcat Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) capped off his heavyweight career in grand fashion, posting a 21-9 overall record and a 13-2 record in his final 15 matches with Ohio. Adelman was 16-4 in dual meets and reeled of eight straight wins from Jan. 3 to Jan. 21, with half of those wins coming by pin or major decision. The Ohio heavyweight earned a 4-2 win over West Virginia's nationally-ranked Dustin Rogers on Feb. 9 for the 50th win of his career. He finished with a 53-39 overall record in a Bobcat uniform and earned back-to-back wins at the MAC Championship to end his career with a third place finish in the conference tournament. Junior Antione Love (Gahanna, Ohio), in his first season with the Bobcats after transferring to Ohio, also had a standout year with a 23-8 overall record and a 16-3 mark in dual meets. Love finished second on the Bobcat roster with nine pins and was not pinned during the season. He took third place at the MAC Championship at 165 pounds. Love earned a fifth-place finish at the Michigan State Open with a 4-2 record in Ohio's season-opener on Nov. 12. Sophomore Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio) started the season with an injury but returned on Dec. 15 and went 14-9 for the season. Jackson, a regular at 133, posted a 12-9 record in his usual weight class but also went 2-0 while filling in at 141 pounds. He posted a 4-1 record in matches decided by a major decision and recorded three separate win streaks of three matches. Jackson's biggest win of the season came on Feb. 3, when he defeated 16th-ranked Eric Albright by a score of 9-5. Fellow sophomore Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) also posted a winning season in 2006-07 with an overall record of 19-16. He started the season off with five wins and two pins in his first eight matches and reeled off six straight victories later in the season. Reichard had a rough ending to the season after the six-match win streak as he dropped seven of his last 10 matches, including each of the last five. Sophomore Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) finished the 2006-07 season with a 10-9 overall record and was a perfect 5-0 in MAC action. He earned the No. 1 seed at the MAC Championship after his fifth MAC win of the year, a win over 17th-ranked Eric Kruger of Central Michigan. His season came to a disappointing end, however, as he lost his first two matches at the event for an early exit. With projected 125-pound starter Caleb Metcalf (Waterville, Ohio) out all season due to injury, freshman Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) filled in nicely for Greenlee and the Bobcats. Morton went 11-16 on the season, including a 9-0, major decision win over West Virginia's Scott Stuart on Feb. 9. The 2006-07 Ohio wrestling schedule started off with a stop at the Michigan State Open, where no team scores were kept. Love took fifth place at the event, which featured more than 360 wrestlers from 21 different schools. Ison finished with a seventh-place finish in East Lansing. After a couple weeks off, the Bobcats hit the dual meet schedule hard as they took on five opponents in one day at the Hoosier Duals on Nov. 25. Ohio went 4-1 at the event as the Bobcats topped Cumberland, Bucknell, Appalachian State, and Oregon in dual meets before falling to Indiana in the event's finale. Love was a perfect 4-0 on the day while Ison went 3-1 and Reichard finished 3-2. Senior Matt Smith (Sandyville, W.Va.) and redshirt freshman Clay Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) also went 3-2 on the day. After a 34th place showing at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, the Bobcats began MAC dual meet action with a thrilling 18-15 win over Eastern Michigan. The Bobcats fell behind 12-3 early due large in part to a forfeit at 125 pounds, but won five of the final six matches for the come-from-behind win. Frerichs, Ison and Love all won the final three matches of the meet in the victory. Ohio returned to non-conference action Dec. 15 with an 18-15 loss to Findlay, but rebounded nicely with a 2-1 showing at the Purdue Duals on Dec. 17. The Bobcats crushed Carson-Newman and Indianapolis before falling to host Purdue. Madsen and freshman Kevin Christensen (Springfield, Ohio) combined to go 3-0 on the day at 141 pounds while Love won both matches he wrestled on the day. Frerichs and Ison each went 2-1 at the event. The Bobcats went back to tournament competition Dec. 30 at the Southern Scuffle, finishing in 24th place out of 32 teams. Ohio then returned home for a non-conference tilt against Virginia Tech and earned a dominating 37-9 win over the Hokies. Frerichs, Reichard and Adelman all recorded pins in the win. Ohio carried the momentum into the Wolfpack Duals on Jan. 6, winning all three dual meets at the event. The Bobcats took down Gardner-Webb, Campbell and South Dakota State at the event and won each meet by at least 23 points. Six different Bobcats posted 3-0 records on the day. The Bobcats returned to MAC play Jan. 19 and were edged by Northern Illinois, 18-13. Despite the loss, the result was much closer than the previous season's 29-9 defeat at the hands of the Huskies. After a 1-2 showing at the Wendy's Big Classic Duals hosted by Ashland, Ohio returned to the MAC with a 25-9 win over Buffalo. The Bulls had handed the Bobcats a 25-9 loss just one season earlier. Love recorded a pin and Tucker won by major decision in the victory. The win over the Bulls was the first of four straight dual meet victories for Ohio. Hosting both Ashland and Virginia on Feb. 3 at the Ohio Triangular, the Bobcats defeated both teams in dual meet action. The day started with a 24-14 win over Ashland and concluded with an 18-12 win over the Cavaliers. Five Bobcats were 2-0 on the day, including Marcus Adelman. Adelman earned a win in the heavyweight bout against Virginia that secured the Bobcat win. Ohio recorded its fourth consecutive win with a 22-16 win at West Virginia on Feb. 9. Ison and Madsen won their respective matches by pin and Morton earned a major decision to lead the Bobcats to victory. The win was the 16th of the season for Ohio while Adelman's victory at heavyweight was the 50th of his career. After nearly taking down No. 25 Kent State on Feb. 11, the Bobcats finished their regular season with a home loss to No. 5 Central Michigan. Next up for the team was the MAC Championship March 3-4 from Buffalo, N.Y. The first day of the event was particularly rough for the Bobcats as every member of the team was bounced from the championship bracket. The team rebounded in day two of the event, but still finished with a fourth place finish out of six teams at the event. The Bobcats have plenty to look forward to for the 2007-08 season. Every starter from the 2006-07 team, with the exception of Adelman at heavyweight, has eligibility remaining and could be back next year. Frerichs, Ison and Love will likely anchor next year's Bobcat team as they look to make a run and turn heads in the conference. |
