ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University redshirt freshman wrestler Cody Walters was selected as the 2013 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year on Tuesday.
Walters received the league's top freshman honor after he captured the MAC title in the 174-pound weight class following a 5-3 decision over Buffalo's John-Martin Cannon. With the win, Walters punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships.
During the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Walters opened with a 2-1 decision over Central Michigan's Craig Kelliher. He would go on to defeat Buffalo's John-Martin Cannon, 3-1. Walters earned a 5-2 decision over Iowa State's Tanner Weatherman before falling to Illinois' Jordan Blanton, 4-3 to finish eighth and earn All-America honors.
The Macedonia, Ohio native burst on the scene this season by opening the year with 19 straight victories. He then closed the regular season with 12-consecutive victories. Walters finished the season with an overall 39-5 record.
Missouri Wrestling Coach Brian Smith was named Wrestling Coach of the Year, while Kent State's Dustin Kilgore was named Wrestler of the Year.
All three awards were voted on by each of the conference's eight head wrestling coaches following the conclusion of the NCAA Wrestling Tournament.
