Ohio Places Three Wrestlers on Academic All-MAC Team

ATHENS, Ohio - A league-best three Ohio University individuals were selected to the 2014 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Wrestling team on Wednesday. The results of the team were based on a vote conducted by the faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions.

Senior Jeremy Johnson (Brecksville, Ohio) and sophomore Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) were named to the Academic All-MAC team for the second-consecutive season, while fellow sophomore Cody Watlers (Macedonia, Ohio) also was selected to the team.

Johnson was selected to the team after he posted one of the finest season's in school history as he posted 41 wins en route to earning All-America honors. His trip to the NCAA Championship marked the fourth-consecutive season he qualified for nationals. Johnson earned the trip to nationals after capturing the MAC Championship for the second time in three years. Off the mat, Johnson tallied a 3.3 grade point average in Mid-Moderate Education.

Chino earned his second-consecutive honor to the Academic All-MAC team following another trip the NCAA Championship. He finished the year with 19 wins and placed fifth a the MAC Championship. In the classroom, Chino posted a 3.3 grade point average in Marketing.

Walters made his first appearance on the league's all-academic team after he finished the year with a 13-4 mark en route to successfully defending his 2013 MAC Championship. In addition, Walters earned his second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship. Away from the mat, He owns a 3.2 grade point average in Physical Education.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
