ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University wrestling team opens the 2012-13 season on Saturday as it travels to Charlottesville, Va. for the Virginia Duals. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. inside Memorial Gymnasium and will feature No. 16 Virginia, Anderson and Chattanooga.
Redshirt junior heavyweight Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) returns for his junior season after he posted one of the best seasons in school history last year, finishing with a 35-7 record en route to earning All-America honors. Johnson also claimed the Mid-American Conference individual title.
Fellow junior Ryan Garringer (Downers Grove, Ill.) also returns to the mat after he tallied an 18-15 mark to earn a spot at the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Garringer finished third at the MAC Championship.
Ohio also returns sophomores Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) and Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) both of whom placed fourth at 157 and 149, respectively during the 2012 MAC Championships.
The Bobcats open competition after taking part in its annual Green and White scrimmage this past Sunday in Athens. Redshirt freshmen Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) and Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) each highlighted the match for the Bobcats as both posted wins during the scrimmage. Johnson also earned a win to highlight competition.
