ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio sophomore Phil Wellington was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday by the league office. Wellington received the weekly award for the first of his career.
Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) received the award after he highlighted competition for the Bobcats at the Michigan State Open as he went 4-0 en route to earning a winning performance at 197 pounds.
He opened the bracket by pinning T.J. Hohenadel (Indiana). He then went on to post a major decision over Kelvin Jordan from Indiana Tech and then downed Northern Illinois' Shawn Scott. In the final bout, he downed Braden Atwood from Purdue by a count of 6-3.
Ohio returns to action on Saturday as it heads to the Eastern Michigan Duals in Ypsilanti, Mich. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
