ATHENS, Ohio -Ohio University wrestler Cody Walters was named the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week following his performance this past weekend at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Walters (174 lbs, Redshirt Freshman, 3.117, Pre-Sport Management) had an incredible performance at the 2012 Reno Tournament of Champions. The redshirt freshman entered the weekend as the No. 1 seed in the 174-pound class, and he lived up to his billing, winning five straight bouts to claim top honors at the tournament.
He also kept his perfect record intact, improving to 18-0 on the year. Walters won one of his bouts in a dominating fashion, earning a 14-0 technical fall in his second action of the day.
Currently ranked No. 20 according to InterMat.com, Walters helped pace Ohio to a seventh-place finish in the tournament field of 27 schools.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition.
The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
