Ohio Brings in the New Year at Southern Scuffle

ATHENS, Ohio - The No. 25 Ohio University wrestling team (4-1) opens 2014 as it travels to the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will play host to the event on Jan. 1-2.

The two-day event features 34 teams, including 11 that are currently ranked in the top 25 in the current Intermat team rankings. The ranked teams are No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Minnesota, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Cornell, No. 12 Iowa State, No. 13 Missouri, No. 17 Virginia, No. 18 Pittsburgh, No. 21 Oregon State, No. 22 Stanford and No. 25 Ohio.

Ohio will have three wrestlers competing that are ranked in the top-20 nationally according to intermatwrestle.com seven who have claimed top-5 titles in tournaments thus far in the 2013-14 season.

Tywan Claxton - Junior | 149 | South Euclid, Ohio
Claxton is the No. 17 wrestler in the 149-class... Finished as the runner-up at the Michigan State Open with a record of 3-1... Owns a 4-1 mark in duels and holds an overall record of 11-2.

Phil Wellington - redshirt sophomore | 197 | Euclid, Ohio
Wellington is the No. 13 wrestler in the nation for the 197-class... Claimed his weight class title at the Reno Tournament of Champions... Won the Michigan State Open with a 4-0 record... Claimed an individual title at the Navy Classic with a 4-0 record... Holds the team's highest winning percentage with a 12-1 mark.

Owns the Bobcats' highest individual ranking at No. 11... Won his weight class at the Reno Tournament of Champions... Posted a third-place finish at the Michigan State Open, finishing with a 4-1 record... Tallied Top 3 finish at the Navy Classic with a 3-1 mark... Finished fifth at the 2012 Reno Tournament of Champions.

Placed fifth at the Reno Tournament of Champions... Won the 141-class bracket at the Michigan State Open... Went 4-3 at the Navy Classic.
