ATHENS, Ohio - Coming off a two week break, the Ohio University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to the University of Louisville for Pre-Nationals on Saturday. The men will take the line at 11:00 a.m. with the women's race beginning at 11:45 a.m.
Over 120 men's and women's teams will take part in the event that will be the host site of the 2012 NCAA Championships.
Last year's eventual champion and current No. 1 Florida State will take part in the event on the women's side. In addition, No. 6 Georgetown and No.8 Michigan - last year's second and third place finishers - will also run at the event. Other ranked teams will include No. 15 Toledo and No. 24 Villanova.
On the men's side, No. 3 BYU, No. 5 Iona and No. 9 Tulsa will all compete at Pre-Nationals. Other ranked teams include No. 12 Villanova, No. 14 Florida State, No. 20 Georgetown and No. 20 Eastern Kentucky, and No. 23 William & Mary.
During the 2011 Pre-Nationals, the men finished 26th overall. Senior Tyler Ames (Cortland, Ohio) led the Green and White, clocking a time of 25:45 to finish 100th. Fellow teammates Noah Howkins (Stow, Ohio) and Chase Robinson (Navarre, Ohio) each finished in the top 150 as well, posting times of 25:58 (123rd) and 26:16 (146th), respectively.
Last year on the women's side, juniors Emily Pifer (Canal Winchester, Ohio) and Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) paced the `Cats to a top 20 finish as Ohio placed 19th. Pifer finished with a time of 21:21, placing in 44th, while Accurso posted a time of 22:01 (54th).
The men's team return to action after they took ninth at the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 29; Senior Tyler Ames (Cortland, Ohio) paced the Green and White. Posting a time of 25:06 to finish 18 th.
On the women's side, junior Juli Accurso (Casstown, Ohio) led the `Cats at the Invitational, helping the squad finish 14th overall, while taking runner-up honors with an impressive time of 16:35. Accurso finished just six seconds behind the Florida State's Colleen Quigley who won the event.
