ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio men's and women's cross country teams will take aim at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championship crown on Saturday. Both teams will travel to Muncie, Ind. to take part in the annual event which will be held at the Muncie Elks Golf Course.
The men's 8,000-meter run is set to begin at 11 a.m. The women's 6,000-meter race will get started at noon. Ball State University will play host to the championships.
Two weeks ago, both men's and women's teams competed among some the top squads in the country at the 2011 Pre-National Invitational. The women's team earned a 19th-place finish, while the men's team placed 26th.
Sophomore Emily Pifer was the top finisher on the women's side as she placed 44th in a time of 21:21. Teammate Juli Accurso also turned in a strong performance as she took 54th, clocking a performance of 22:01. Prior to her finish at Pre-Nationals, Accurso won the All-Ohio Championships on (Oct. 1).
Junior Tyler Ames paced the men at Pre-Nationals as he clocked a time of 25:45.
The women's team has won 10 MAC Championships - the most by any league school - with the last conference title coming in 2007. The men's team has been crowned league champion on three separate occasions - it's last title came in 1996.
During last season's event, the men's team placed fifth with 107 points, while the women ran to a fourth-place finish. Toledo won the MAC women's team title for the third time in school history, while Eastern Michigan claimed its 15th Men's Championship title in school history.
