ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University men's cross country team travels to the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championship on Saturday. The 8-kilometer race begins at 11 a.m. and will take place at the Forrest Creason Golf Course on the campus of Bowling Green State University.
In the MAC preseason coaches' poll, Ohio was picked to finish seventh. The Bobcats look poised to place higher than that on Saturday. The Bobcats will be search of their fourth MAC title in school history. Ohio's last championship came in 1996.
Ohio enters the meet riding the momentum of its winning performance at the Pre-National Invitational that was held on Oct. 19 at Indiana State University. The Bobcats defeated conference foes Bowling Green, Kent State, and Toledo at the meet.
Two weeks ago at the Pre-National Invitational, Bobcat runners Jacob Stephens, Jarrod Genther and Kurt Steinmuller have all recorded faster times than those they recorded at last year's championship as all three set their season-best times at the Pre-National Invitational.
During last week's event, Stephens' clocked a season best time of 25:32.16, surpassing the 25:58.5 performance he ran at last year's MAC Championship. Genther's season-best outing of 25:20.17 is nearly a minute faster than the 26:02.6 he recorded at the 2012 MAC Championship. Steinmuller raced to a season best time of 25:34.37, which was over 30 seconds faster than the 26:05.8 performance he ran at the MAC Championship last season.
Senior Chase Robinson also returns to championship action after not competing in last year's event. He placed 33rd at both the 2010 and 2011 MAC championships.
