CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Ohio men's basketball team (1-2) suffered a 79-65 setback to Dayton (2-1) on Friday (Nov. 17) in a 2017 Gildan Charleston Classic matchup at TD Arena.
The contest marked the first time the in-state rivals met on the hardwood since March 9, 1965.
Dayton drilled 10 three-pointers in the victory -- including seven in the first half. The Flyers outrebounded the Bobcats, 40-30, and Dayton's bench outscored Ohio's, 23-6. The Bobcats shot just 7-of-17 from the charity stripe while the Flyers converted 13 of their 15 free throw attempts.
Junior guard Jordan Dartis (Newark, Ohio) went 7-of-12 from the field with three triples en route to scoring a team-high 19 points. He also had three assists, two rebounds and a steal in 34 minutes. Junior guard/forward Gavin Block (Lincoln, Ill.) just missed out on a second-straight double-double with 14 points and a team-high nine boards. He also distributed a team-high four assists in 34 minutes of work. Freshman guard Teyvion Kirk (Joliet, Ill.) logged 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal over 27 minutes.
Senior guard Darrell Davis tallied a game-high 25 points for Dayton, shooting 7-of-13 from the field with three treys and making all eight of his free throw attempts. He also recorded three assists and a rebound in 34 minutes. Redshirt junior forward Josh Cunningham achieved a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 19 rebounds -- including eight on the offensive glass -- over 31 minutes. Junior forward Xeyrius Williams finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, a game-high six assists and two steals in 36 minutes. Freshman guard Jordan Davis posted 10 points, a game-high three steals and two rebounds in 30 minutes of work off of the bench. Redshirt freshman forward Kostas Antetokounmpo blocked a game-high three shots and also had four points and three rebounds in 13 minutes off of the bench.
The Bobcats jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the early going, using jumpers by senior guard Mike Laster (Detroit, Mich.), junior forward Doug Taylor (Columbus, Ohio) and Dartis and a pair of free throws by Kirk to take a three-point lead with 17:29 left in the first half.
Unfortunately for Ohio, layups by Cunningham and Darrell Davis gave the Flyers a lead they never relinquished the rest of the game. All told, Dayton led for 35:21 in the contest.
Trailing by nine at halftime, Ohio managed to cut Dayton's lead down to six at 43-37 with just under 19 minutes to go after a triple by Dartis and a dunk by Taylor. That's as close as Ohio got, though, as an and-one jumper by Cunningham and a jumper and a three by Jordan Davis made it a 12-point lead for the Flyers at 51-39 with just under 16 minutes left. Dayton never led by less than eight the rest of the way. The Flyers went a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line in the second half, with Darrell Davis sinking all eight of his freebies in the final 20 minutes of play.
Ohio will look to close out its time at the 2017 Gildan Charleston Classic with a win when it takes on Indiana State on Sunday (Nov. 19) at 1 p.m. ET in the tournament's seventh-place game. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN3.
