Ohio Softball Drops Extra Inning Contest to UNCG

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Ohio softball team continued play at the 2019 Gamecock Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 16), falling to UNC Greensboro, 4-3 in eight innings. Sophomore Katie Yun led Ohio at the plate with three hits, two doubles and three RBI. 

Ohio would threaten right off the bat in the top of the first inning. With one out, Yun (North Canton, Ohio) doubled to right center, followed by a walk from senior Natalie Alvarez (Long Beach, Calif.). After a 10-pitch at bat, senior Morgan Geno (Chillicothe, Ohio) would draw a walk, unfortunately, the Bobcats would be unable to get a run across, sending the game to the bottom of the first still scoreless. 

UNCG would get on the board in the bottom of the frame with a three-run homerun, taking a 3-0 lead to the second inning. 

The Bobcats would respond in the top of the second. Senior Deanna Cole (Akron, Ohio) would lead the inning off with a single to short. Cole would then move to second on a ground out. Junior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) would reach on an error, putting runners on second and third. Then with two outs, Yun would record her first hit of the day, a two-RBI single to left, cutting the UNCG lead to 3-2 entering the bottom of the second. 

After a scoreless third and fourth inning from both teams, Ohio would threaten in the top of the fifth inning. Alvarez would lead the inning off with a double to center, and then be replaced on the bases by freshman Justice Ruggles (Grass Lake, Mich.). Then with two outs, Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) would draw a walk and then Cole would single to load the bases. However, the Bobcats would be unable to push a run across and would go to the bottom of the frame, still trailing 3-2. 

After a scoreless bottom of the fifth. Ohio would strike again in the top of the sixth inning, Holland would lead the inning off with a single. The with one out, Yun double and then move to third, allowing Holland to score, tying the game at 3-3 going into the bottom of the sixth. 

After a scoreless top of the seventh for Ohio, UNCG would try and take the game in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, they would draw a walk and the but two runners on after a one out single. However, the Bobcats' defense would get the final two outs and send the game to the top of the eighth tied at 3-3.  

After a scoreless top of the eighth innings for the Bobcats, UNCG would be able to snag a run in the bottom of the frame off of an RBI double, taking the game by the final of 4-3. 

Overall, Ohio scored three runs on eight hits with three errors, while UNCG scored four runs on six hits and had one error. 

Individually, Yun went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Cole went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Holland added a hit and two runs scored, while Alvarez added a double for the Bobcats. 

In the circle, freshman Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched 7.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four. 

Up next, the Bobcats wrap up play at the 2019 Gamecock Invitational on Sunday (Feb. 17) when they Bobcats take on Campbell at 10 a.m. and Charlotte at 3 p.m.
