Karen Hewitt begins her second season on the Ohio women's basketball staff during the 2009-10 season.
Hewitt's impact on Ohio was felt almost immediately in her first year as three of Ohio's guards enjoyed banner years under her watch during 2008-09. Jennifer Bushby, Jenny Poff and Lauren Hmiel, all averaged double figures in scoring. Hmiel was named to the All-MAC Second Team and averaged 15.3 ppg., while Bushby led the MAC in assists with 159 (5.3 apg.) and picked up All-MAC Third Team recognition. Bushby's assist totals ranked 26th in the nation and was the fifth-highest single-season total in school history. She helped Poff tie for second on Ohio's single-season 3-pointers list with 69 treys on the season.
A Cincinnati native, Hewitt came to Ohio after serving as the associate head coach at Mount Notre Dame High School. In 2008, Hewitt helped lead Mount Notre Dame to its third straight state championship. Prior to that, Hewitt was an assistant coach at her alma mater St. Francis University (Pa.) for three years. She played there from 2000-04.
As a coach at St. Francis, Hewitt acted as the recruiting coordinator, community liaison, and camp coordinator, in addition to fundraising and coaching duties. As a player, Hewitt helped lead the Red Flash to three Northeast Conference Tournament Titles. She also earned regional academic All-American status and was awarded a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship as a senior. She holds program records for assists in a game (16), season (202), and career (574). She was a two-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. She received Saint Francis' Miss Frankie Award, which is presented annually to the University's top senior female student and was also the recipient of the J. Irving Whalley Sportsmanship Award, which goes to the senior student-athlete who best demonstrates sportsmanship while serving as a role model for fellow student-athletes.
Hewitt has participated in the NCAA Leadership Conference twice, including as a player and a coach. In 2006, she made a presentation at the conference titled, "Beyond the Obvious: Applying Athletics Lessons to Your Career," which highlighted how the characteristics of knowledge, discipline, communication and balance translate to both the athletic, academic, and professional settings. Hewitt was one of six former student-athletes selected by the NCAA to present on the topic.
She is single and resides in Athens.
