With a Division I playing background and coaching experience in both the men's and women's games, Samba Johnson returns for his third season with the Ohio women's basketball program.

The former head women's basketball coach at La Roche College, Johnson joined the Ohio women's basketball program as an assistant coach in June 2003.

"Samba has a lot of recruiting experience and just fits well in regards to our staff," said Bobcat Head Coach Lynn Bria. "I think he has really added a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm to our program."

Johnson serves as the team's head recruiting coordinator. Included in a list of Johnson's most notable recruits is last year's Mid-American Conference Sixth-Man of the Year and true freshman Simone Redd.

In 2002-03, Johnson guided the La Roche Lady Redhawks to a 7-19 record in his first season at the Division III school in Pittsburgh. The previous year, he served as the head assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Charleston, which finished 25-7 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Before spending the 2000-01 season as the director of basketball operations for Duquesne University, Johnson was the head men's basketball coach at Penn State New Kensington. During his three seasons there, he compiled a 46-42 record and was twice named the Penn State Commonwealth Campus West Division Coach of the Year.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Johnson was an all-city selection for Schenley High School, who played two seasons at Robert Morris University.

After transferring to Chaminade University of Honolulu following the 1993-94 season, he became an all-conference performer who led the Swords in scoring, assists and steals.

Johnson received his bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing from Chaminade in May 1996.
