Megan Thorburn

Player Profile

Position:
Assistant Coach

Alma Mater:
Bowling Green '07

Former Mid-American Conference standout Megan Thorburn begins her second season as an assistant coach at Ohio and her fourth overall during the 2011-12 season.

In her first season with the Bobcats, Thorburn helped the Ohio guards rank fourth in the conference in steals with 293 (9.58 per game) on the year. Individually, Ashley Fowler and Tenishia Benson ranked in the top-eight in multiple categories against the MAC. Benson ranked sixth in steals per game (2.2) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.32). Fowler finished her sophomore year fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.37) and eighth in steals (3.69 per game).

"We are thrilled to have Megan join the Bobcat family," Ohio coach Semeka Randall said upon Thorburn's hiring. "She comes from a great winning background having played for a good coach and knows what it takes to succeed as a college basketball player. She is a very enthusiastic individual and an up and coming coach who wants to make an impact and continue to build the tradition of Ohio basketball."

A familiar face in the MAC, Thorburn was a four-year standout at Bowling Green prior to joining GVSU. Thorburn left her mark on the Lakers, helping guide the team to a combined 38-20 record during her two seasons in Allendale, Mich. During the 2008-09 season, she helped direct the team to a 20-10 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. She helped mentor Kim Wyngaard to All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team recognition in 2008-09, and has coached the last two GLIAC Freshman of the Year award winners.

Before her time at GVSU, Thorburn spent one year as a graduate assistant at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. During that year, she helped lead the Muskies to a 12-6 record in conference play and helped KC Blahnik garner Second Team All-Northern Athletics Conference recognition.

Prior to her coaching career, Thorburn played four seasons for perennial MAC power Bowling Green. During her four-year career, she played in 126 games and started 87 of them. During her time on campus, she helped lead the Falcons to a combined 103-25 record and three NCAA Tournament berths, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2006-07. She finished her career ranking in the top-12 on BGSU's list for 3-pointers made (92) and in the top-10 for single-season three-point field goal percentage (41 percent).

"I'm honored to be able to be here at Ohio and work with such a knowledgeable coaching staff that understands the game," Thorburn said. "When I came here, I felt like this was a place I really wanted to be. It truly is a privilege to be back in the Mid-American Conference."

A native of Mason, Mich., Thorburn received her bachelor's degree in Education/Planned Program from Bowling Green in 2007 and recently completed her master's degree in Adult and Higher Education from GVSU.
