Skyler Young begins his third season as an assistant coach at Ohio during the 2011-12 campaign. He works with the `Cats' post players and assists with opponent scouting, recruiting, scheduling and other day-to-day staff responsibilities.
Young's preparation and scouting reports helped Ohio to a 72-56 win at Northern Illinois in the first round of the 2011 MAC Tournament. The Bobcats showed a one-win improvement from 2009-10 to 2010-11. In his two season with the 'Cats, Young's scouting and coaching efforts paid big dividends. Defensively, Ohio held the opposition under 60 points 29 times including 15 during the 2009-10 season, which was arguably one of the tougher slates in program history.
He helped Kamille Buckner become Ohio's all-time leader in blocks and helped guide Jennifer Bushby to All-MAC recognition. Buckner wrapped up her career with 199 blocks, the all-time leader at Ohio. That total ranks second in MAC history as well.
Prior to coming to Ohio, Young spent a season at Detroit Mercy, where he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Titans during the 2008-09 season. Despite spending just a year at Detroit, Young left an impression, helping guide the Titans to a six-game turnaround from the previous season. In addition to his on-court coaching duties, where he worked primarily with Detroit's post players, Young organized various recruiting programs for the staff and was involved heavily in preparing opponent scouting reports and other responsibilities within the program.
Before his season at Detroit Mercy, Young served as an assistant coach at Western Michigan University for three seasons (2005-08). While with the Broncos, Young was responsible for on-court coaching and skill development, with emphasis on the perimeter positions. His on-court coaching at WMU assisted in the development of three NCAA All-Americans, an NCAA Division I national scoring leader and WNBA caliber talent. Young also had extensive responsibilities with recruiting potential student athletes, as well as scouting opponents. While at WMU, the Broncos won the Mid-American Conference Championship in 2003, which gave the Broncos an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The following season, the Broncos advanced to the WNIT Quarterfinals.
In the spring of 2005, Young worked with the Seattle Storm of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) in Seattle, WA, as the equipment manager. While with the Storm, he was responsible for the ordering, delegation and care of team apparel and equipment. In his one season in Seattle, Young also helped with on-court individual skill development for players, which included working with WNBA All-Stars Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird.
Prior to becoming a full-time staff member at WMU, Young served as an undergraduate manager from 2000-05. He assisted with the day to day operation duties, film exchange and team travel.
Young, a Grand Rapids, Mich. native, graduated from WMU in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
