ATHENS, Ohio - Led by junior Lauren Kohn (Adrian, Mich.) with a game-high 21 points, the Ohio women's basketball team defeated Akron, 66-55, on Tuesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio.
With the win, the Bobcats improve 9-8 overall and 2-3 in the MAC. The Zips fall to 7-10 on the season and 0-5 in the MAC.
Kohn led all scorers on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. She also made all six attempts from the charity stripe.
Senior Domenica Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Silva shot 4-of-9 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. She also had a career-best six blocks.
Junior Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) had 11 points from 3-of-6 field goal shooting and 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line. Sophomore Rachel Frederick (Gibsonia, Pa.) added 10 points.
For the game Ohio shot 37.5 from the floor, connecting on 18-of-48 attempts. The `Cats won the points off turnovers battle scoring 25 points off of the Zips' 22 miscues.
"Any win is a good win for us," said Head Coach Syliva Crawley. "I was very pleased with the effort of the team tonight. I thought late in the stretch we made better decisions as far of time/score situations and getting stops."
Akron was held to making just 34 percent of its attempts from the field. Jessie Crooks led the Zips with 14 points. Niki McCoy and Sarah Tokodi scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Ohio overcame a nine-point deficit in the first half to lead 28-24 going into halftime.
Silva scored the first four points of the game for the Bobcats with a layup and a couple of free throws. McCoy scored all of Akron's 11 points in the first seven minutes as the Zips held an 11-4 edge over the `Cats at the 14:06 mark, forcing a timeout by Ohio.
Two free throws by Ward at 13:33 kicked off a 12-0 Ohio run to give the `Cats a 16-13 lead with 8:28 remaining in the half. Ward, who finished the half with 11 points, had five points in the run, Kohn had four points and Silva added a bucket to go along with two blocks and a steal.
The Zips then held the `Cats scoreless for four and half minutes with a 6-2 run to take a 19-18 lead at 5:52. Ward nailed a three-pointer to break Ohio's scoring drought and to put the `Cats up 21-19 at 3:34. Ohio kept its lead and went into intermission with a four point advantage.
In the first four minutes of the second half, Akron outscored the `Cats 4-1 to take a one point lead at 30-29. A block by Silva led to a basket by Kohn at 16:09 to put the `Cats back on top at 31-30. There were two more lead changes and two ties until the 10:02 mark. Ohio took control and went on a 15-2 run in the span of eight minutes for its biggest lead of the night at 53-40 with 2:44 left in regulation.
A solid free throw effort from Kohn in the second half kept the `Cats ahead by as many as 11 points throughout the remainder of the half and the Bobcats came out with the 66-55 win. Kohn hit 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the second half, all in the last 1:17 of play.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host Western Michigan at The Convo at 7 p.m.
