ATHENS, Ohio - Despite a late second-half surge, the Ohio University women's basketball team (8-17, 3-11 MAC) fell to Akron (17-8, 11-3 MAC), 88-76, in a Mid-American Conference East Division matchup on Saturday (Feb. 22) at the Convocation Center.
Senior guards Erin Bailes (Huntington, W. Va.) and Olivia McCuskey (St. Albans, W. Va.) were honored on-court before the game for 2014 Senior Day.
Sophomore guard Kiyanna Black (Columbus, Ohio) tallied a career-high nine rebounds and 26 points to register her seventh 20-point game of the season. Black's five steals in the contest tied her career-high.
Sophomore forward Lexie Baldwin (Hattiesburg, Miss.) dished in 17 points to go along with nine rebounds. Baldwin scored six points in the last four minutes to ignite the Cats' comeback attempt.
Freshman guard Quiera Lampkins (Gahanna, Ohio) compiled three assists and scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Sophomore guard Kat Yelle (Geneva, Ill.) shot 67% from the floor en route to a nine-point performance.
The first half saw four ties and seven lead changes. After Ohio took a 26-25 lead with 7:32 to play, Akron rattled off a 16-4 run to arrive at the intermission with a 41-30 edge on the Bobcats.
Akron maintained its lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Ohio came within four points on two different occasions, but could not inch any closer. The Zips boasted their biggest lead (76-59) at the 6:39 mark, but the Bobcats put together a 17-5 run to cut the Zips' lead to five (81-76) with 0:44 remaining. Akron finished the game with seven free-throws to clinch its victory
Ohio will next be in action when it goes head-to-head with Buffalo on Thursday (Feb. 27) at the Convocation Center. The MAC East Division matchup is slated for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
