Bobcats Lose at Bowling Green, 73-52

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In a game which featured 40 fouls and 46 free-throw attempts, the Ohio University Women’s Basketball Team wasn’t able to overcome a strong Bowling Green squad on the road Sunday, falling by a final score of 73-52 at the Stroh Center.

After trailing 44-23 at the half, the Bobcats stepped up their play over the final 20 minutes, tying the Falcons 29-29 in the second half.

The hosts shot 24-46 (52.2 percent) from the field in the game, including going 6-16 (37.5 percent) from three-point range. Bowling Green attempted 27 free throws in the game, sinking 19 of them to shoot 70.4 percent.

Ohio ended the game shooting 19-58 (32.8 percent) from the field in the loss. The ‘Cats struggled from three-point range, going 1-12 (8.3 percent).

Shavon Robinson (Canton, Ohio) led the way for the Green and White, scoring 14 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. Lexie Baldwin (Hattiesburg, Miss.) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and also chipped in offensively, scoring eight points. Bowling Green had four players score in double figures, with Chrissy Steffen’s 14 points leading the way.

Bowling Green (19-9, 10-5 Mid-American Conference) got off to a very fast start, scoring 19 of the game’s first 23 points to take a 19-4 lead at the 11:38 media timeout. Chrissy Steffen had the hot hand early, scoring eight points in the first eight minutes. The Falcons were hot from the field, hitting eight of their first 10 field goal attempts, including going 3-4 from three-point distance. Ohio struggled early in possession, committing five turnovers in the first 4:31 and didn’t hit its first field goal of the game until Kiyanna Black (Columbus, Ohio) laid one in at the 14:30 mark.

The Falcons would extend their lead to as many as 24 points in the first half and would ultimately take a 44-23 lead into the locker room. Bowling Green shot a blistering 18-26 (69 percent) from the field in the first half, including a 5-8 (63 percent) mark from three-point distance. Steffen led all scorers through the first 20 minutes, scoring 13 points on 5-5 shooting (3-3 from distance). Ohio (6-21, 1-14 MAC) shot 8-27 (29.6 percent) in the first half, including a 1-5 mark (20 percent) from distance. The Bobcats were led in scoring by Robinson, who had seven points on 3-4 shooting from the field.

Ohio scored six of the first 11 points in the second half, largely due to a few good second-chance attempts from offensive rebounds. Tina Fisher (Cottage Grove, Minn.) scored two buckets down low to pace the Green and White in the early going.

Bowling Green would eventually stretch its lead to as many as 29 points (58-29) at the 11:52 mark when Bailey Cairnduff sank two free throws. The ‘Cats would then go on an 8-1 run over the next 3:32, pulling within 22 when Erin Bailes (Huntington, W.Va.) made a layup at the 8:20 mark.

Ohio will next be in action on Wednesday, March 6 at home against Miami. The Bobcats and RedHawks will tip off at 7 p.m. in Ohio’s final regular-season game of the year.
