OXFORD, Ohio – The Ohio University Women’s Basketball Team fell to a strong Miami squad in the first round of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon, losing 83-61 at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio.
With the loss on Saturday, Ohio’s 2012-13 season comes to an end with a mark of 6-23. The RedHawks improved to 19-11 and will take on Buffalo in the second round of the MAC Tournament.
Miami’s Courtney Osborn stole the show on Saturday afternoon, scoring 39 points on 12-17 shooting from the field. The senior guard went 7-9 from three-point distance and 8-8 from the free-throw line. She keyed a Miami offense which shot 30-54 (55.6 percent) from the field and an impressive 9-14 (64.3 percent) from three-point range.
Shavon Robinson led Ohio with 14 points in the loss. She was joined in double figures by Kiyanna Black (11 points) and Symone Lyles (11 points). Robinson did a good job of attacking the basket, going 5-7 from the free-throw line.
Ohio leapt out to an early 9-6 lead at the first media timeout (15:24) courtesy of five points from Robinson and four from Tina Fisher (Cottage Grove, Minn.). The ‘Cats shot well from the field to begin the game, going 4-5 early.
Miami answered this solid Ohio start with a 24-6 run to take a 30-15 lead at the 8:20 mark. Osborn was key during this run, scoring 12 of Miami’s 24 points during the stretch. Erin Bailes (Huntington, W.Va.) put an end to the run with a mid-range jumper with 7:59 to play in the first half.
Osborn continued her strong play throughout the rest of the half, scoring 21 total points to pace the RedHawks to a 46-27 halftime lead. The senior shot 6-8 from the field (4-5 from distance) and went 5-5 from the free-throw line in the first 20 minutes of play.
Ohio shot 11-29 (37.9 percent) from the field in the first half including a 4-11 (36.4 percent) mark from distance. The ‘Cats were led in scoring by eight points from Black (Columbus, Ohio). Miami went 16-28 (57.1 percent) from the field in the first half and hit 6-9 (66.7 percent) from three-point range. The RedHawks hit 8 of 12 free-throw attempts in the first half.
Lyles (Silver Spring, Md.) got the ‘Cats off to a good start in the second half, scoring six early points to pace the Green and White to a 6-4 run. Ohio pulled within 17 (50-33) thanks to her put-back basket at the 17:32 mark.
Robinson (Canton, Ohio) did a great job of getting to the line in the late stages of the game, pacing the ‘Cats with eight points on a run which pulled them within 12 points (70-58) at the 4:51 mark.
Miami was able to reclaim control of the game from this point on, scoring 13 of the game’s final 16 points to end up with the 83-61 victory.
