Ohio vs. Cleveland State Post game quotes November 17, 2006
Junior Lauren Kohn on the offense:
"We have been shooting the ball well lately; I think that just comes with practice and repetition, and the fact that we do have so many offensive threats out there on the court. It's going to be hard for defenses to stop us on any given night anyone can put up high numbers. It's just a tribute to our team, how well we work together, and getting each other open."
On the team's 2-0 record:
"At the end of the game we were chanting a winning streak, because we didn't have any of that last year. I think it just shows what the coaches are doing in turning this program around."
Junior Simone Redd on the offense:
"I think it especially comes from Domenica and the inside players playing well. By them playing well that tends to have the defense stuck in on them, and then the outside shooters are open. I think that's the main reason why we have been successful on offense."
On her second half adjustments:
"I wanted to be aggressive, and get to the line more. I know that my first game I didn't get to the free throw line at all so Coach Crawley told me I just need to be more aggressive, and get to the line so that's what I tried to do."
On the team's defensive performance:
"It gives us confidence on both ends knowing that they did come in averaging 83 points, it shows that our defense stepped up. At the end we kind of got a little sloppy, but for the most part we held them and played pretty good defense. On the offensive end it just shows that we can score."
Head Coach Sylvia Crawley's opening statement:
"This team has a motion offense where they will be patient and run it until the end of the clock, wait for the defense to fall asleep and then penetrate and try to score. We worked extremely hard this week preparing for Cleveland State. We had a lot of time to prepare for this game so we were ready for them. I focus so much on defense, and I do believe that triggers our offense. Sometimes when you focus so much on one aspect of the game the other side suffers, but with this team their natural scorers."
On key performances by Rachel Frederick and Quintana Ward:
"Rachel (Frederick) and Quintana (Ward) were the keys to this game. Rachel's 11 rebounds were huge, because we beat them on the boards 42-35. Quintana's performance with 7 assists and only 2 turnovers now gives her 13 assists combined in both games. I'm trying to get Quintana to understand that when she has 7 assists, to me that's like 14 points. So when you add 14 points to her 10 points that she scored she gave us 24 points worth of production. She is a very valuable player.
On the importance of different players taking on different roles for the team:
"On this team everyone has a role and it's my job as their head coach to make sure that they accept these roles, play these roles, and feel important to this team. So that's been my biggest challenge so far. Everyone wants to be in the newspaper, everyone wants to score 30 points, but the reality of it is somebody has to rebound, somebody has to defend, and somebody has to pass the ball. I'm extremely proud of how the players played today. Our bench is continuing to get better were going to get them more experience and throw them out there more in the preseason so that by the time the conference games come around were ready."
