ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio women's basketball team staged a late rally against Marshall on Friday afternoon in the Convocation Center, but the Thundering Herd outlasted the Bobcats 78-74 in Ohio's first home game since Nov. 24.
Ohio (4-5) got a career-high 18 points from Chandra Myers (Sugarcreek, Ohio) in addition to eight rebounds, but four Marshall (5-4) players scored in double-digits, including 18 points each from guards Kizzy Hart and Casey Baker.
Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) and Lauren Kohn (Adrian, Mich.) had 16 and 18 points, respectively, for the `Cats to put three Bobcats into double-figures. Ward's 16 was a season-high for the senior point guard and Kohn added a game-high nine rebounds.
Ohio out-rebounded Marshall 37-36 but recorded four more turnovers (19-14) than the Thundering Herd. Marshall tallied 14 steals while Ohio had just six, but the Bobcats went 9-of-24 from the three-point line while Marshall made just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The Herd and Bobcats traded baskets in the first half, with Marshall holding a 33-30 edge at halftime. After the break the teams continued to go shot for shot before Ohio went on a 6-1 run that ended when a Lauren Hmiel (York, Pa.) 3-pointer gave the Bobcats a one-point lead with 15:06 on the clock.
The Herd responded with an 11-2 run that gave them an eight-point lead with 10:31 left in the game. Marshall maintained the lead and held a nine-point advantage, 71-62, with just 1:12 left on the clock. But the Bobcats rallied with the clock ticking away, cutting the lead to just two points on a Kohn 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining.
Ohio had to foul quickly again and Hart sank both free throws and a Marshall lay-up with eight seconds remaining pushed Marshall's lead to four points at 78-74, the final score in the contest.
The score was never tied in the game and the lead changed just twice.
