HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Ohio University women’s basketball team (4-6) dropped a 56-33 decision to host James Madison University (9-3) in its opening game of the JMU Invitational Sunday (Dec. 29) at the Convocation Center.
The Bobcats lost despite limiting the Dukes to 37.5% shooting from the field and tallying nine steals.
Freshman guard Quiera Lampkins (Gahanna, Ohio) reached double figures for the third time this season with 11 points to lead Ohio. Sophomore forward Lexie Baldwin (Hattiesburg, Miss.) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
The Dukes raced out to a 22-4 lead over the first 10 minutes of the contest. Ohio battled back, though, closing the half on an 11-6 run. The stretch was highlighted by five points from Lampkins and a trey by junior guard Mariah Byard (Mannington, W. Va.).
The Bobcats went on a 5-2 run over the first three minutes of the second half thanks in large part to two layups by Lampkins, cutting James Madison’s lead down to 10.
Unfortunately for Ohio, James Madison countered by outscoring the Bobcats by a 26-13 count over the final 16-plus minutes of play to seal the victory.
Ohio will square off with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Monday (Dec. 30) in the third-place game of the JMU Invitational. Tip time is scheduled for noon ET.
