ATHENS, Ohio – Mariah Byard (Mannington, W.Va.) of the Ohio University women’s basketball program has earned a spot on the 2012-13 Mid-American Conference Academic Team, the league office announced on Monday. The sophomore guard joins 11 student-athletes from six other league schools on the squad.
Byard’s honor marks the second straight year in which a Bobcat was named to the Academic All-MAC Team. Tenishia Benson earned similar honors at the end of the 2011-12 season.
A Nursing major with an impressive grade-point average of 3.843, Byard was named to the Dean’s List for the 2012 fall semester. For her full list of athletic achievements, please see below:

Played in 24 games, starting six … Scored 6.3 points per game to rank fifth on the team … Connected on 44 of 146 field-goal attempts to shoot 30.1 percent … Ranked second on the team in three-pointers made, hitting 35 of 112 attempts (31.3 percent) … Scored in double figures on six occasions during the 2012-13 season … Scored a season-high 14 points at Eastern Michigan on Feb. 9 and matched this in a March 6 contest against Miami … Hit two or more three-pointers on 12 occasions throughout the season … Pulled down a season-high five rebounds at Manhattan on Dec. 19.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
