Navy Comes Calling for Home Opener
Nov. 15, 2009
ATHENS, Ohio - Looking to rebound from a loss in its season opener, Ohio women's basketball (0-1) returns to the friendly confines of the Convo as it welcomes Navy (2-0) for its home opener Monday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The contest will also be the first game of a three-game homestand for the `Cats as they will also welcome George Washington and Marshall Nov. 22 and 24, respectively. Ohio will look to rid itself of the bad taste from a loss on the road to Cleveland State last Friday. The `Cats shot an uncharacteristic 29 percent from the field, while the Vikings took advantage of costly Ohio miscues with 31 points off Green and White turnovers. Jennifer Bushby (Gahanna, Ohio) paced Ohio with eight points and a game-high-tying nine rebounds. Sophomore Maxine Ohakim (Westerville, Ohio) chipped in five points, while Kamille Buckner (Chicago, Ill.) turned in three blocks from the defensive side of the court, marking the 25th multi-block game of her career. Monday's contest will mark the fifth meeting all-time between the `Cats and Midshipmen. Ohio has controlled the series to this point, winning three of the four contests, including a 63-48 win in Annapolis, Md., in last year's season opener. The two sides have met two times previously in Athens, splitting the two games. The Green and White won the last meeting in the Convo by a 72-43 tally Nov. 10, 2006. Navy enters the contest riding the momentum two wins at the Phoenix Classic hosted by Elon. The Mids edged by High Point 70-67 in overtime in their season opener before beating the host Phoenix 68-61 last Saturday night. Junior center Cassie Consedine has paced Navy through its first two games, averaging 16 pts. and nine rebounds, while freshman guard Jasmine Pitts is averaging 14 pts. and four rebounds. Head coach Stefanie Pemper is in her second season at the helm of the Mids. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Fans can also listen live while the action unfolds via WOUB AM 1340 and OhioBobcats.com. Tony Castricone and Allie LaForce will have the call. |
