Bobcats Grind Out Win

ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio field hockey team defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes 2-1 in a Mid-American Conference match-up on Sunday, Oct. 22 at Peggy Pruitt Field. With the win the Bobcats improve to 10-7 overall and 7-2 in the MAC. The Golden Flashes (6-13, 3-6 MAC) would get on the board first at the 13:06 mark off an unassisted goal by Kate Perry. Five minutes later, Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.) would tie the game at one with a goal off a penalty corner. Her goal was assisted by Nikki Gnozzio (Flanders, N.J.) and Lindsay Schwartz (Lititz, Pa.). Albini would also add an unassisted goal with about 10 minutes left in the half, which gave the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage. In the first half the Bobcats outshot the Golden Flashes 6-1 and won the penalty corner battle 3-0. The second half would prove to be a defensive battle as neither team allowed a goal. Sophomore Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.) finished the game with one save and one goal against, while Kent State goalkeeper Linz Markwart tallied eight saves and two goals against. The Bobcats totaled 11 shots on the game while holding the Golden Flashes to only four shots. Ohio had 10 shots on goal and took eight more penalty corners than Kent State (10-2). The Bobcats broke a ten-game regular season losing skid to Kent State with the 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. Ohio's last regular season win over the Golden Flashes came in 2001. With the win the Bobcats also clinched a first round bye in the MAC Tournament. The Bobcats can clinch the number one seed in the MAC Tournament with a win over Central Michigan at Peggy Pruitt Field on Friday Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. or with a Central Michigan loss to Kent State on Saturday Oct. 28. |
