No. 16 Ohio Repeats as MAC Tourney Champion

OXFORD, Ohio - With a 3-2 win over Miami in overtime Saturday afternoon, the Ohio field hockey team was crowned MAC Tournament Champion for the second straight year. It is the first time ever that a Bobcat field hockey club has won back-to-back regular-season and tournament championships. Torrie Albini, Rachelle Coetzee, Jessie Martin and Nikki Gnozzio were named to the all-tournament team. Ohio will host Patriot League Tournament Champion American University on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in a NCAA play-in game at Peggy Pruitt Field. The winner will advance to the NCAA Tournament. Ohio heads into Tuesday's game with the most wins the program has had in 25 years with a 17-4 overall record. American has a 16-4 overall record. The Bobcats' game-winner came two minutes into the overtime period. Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) struck it in from the top of the circle off a feed from Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.), to give the `Cats the win and the tournament championship. Coetzee's goal was her 11th overall and sixth game-winner of the year. Miami showed its intensity early on as Alyssa Nye scored her 12th goal of the season at the 15:54 mark and Danielle Gaynor added another goal at the 20:10 mark for a 2-0 RedHawk lead. Nina Bruno (Chevy Chase, Md.) kicked off scoring for Ohio with her second goal of the season in the 21st minute of play as she scored on a direct shot and pass from Albini. Albini then scored her 18th goal at the 26:21 mark, and the Bobcats evened the game at 2-2 going into the half. For the half, Ohio took nine shots and had four penalty corners. Miami took three shots and was awarded three penalty corners. Both teams were scoreless in the second half. The Bobcats didn't make any shots and didn't have any penalty corners, while Miami took three shots and had three penalty corners. Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.) grabbed her 16th win in goal for Ohio and made three saves. Megan Stengel was in goal for Miami and totaled three stops. ---------------------------- |
