ANGOLA, Ind. – The Ohio University women’s golf team completed play at the 2013 Angola Shootout on Saturday, finishing the tournament in seventh place. The Bobcats recorded a team score of 328 in the one-round tournament, finishing just six strokes out of sixth place.
Host Ball State recorded the best score at the tournament, placing first with a mark of 308 strokes. Toledo was not far behind, earning second with a score of 309.
Lauren McKinzie (Medina, Ohio) led the way for the Green and White, tying for 16th with her career-low score of 79. This marked the first time in the freshman’s career at Ohio when she finished within the top 20 of a tournament field. Tied with her, but on the individual side of the tournament, was Kristen Helmsdoerfer (Westerville, Ohio). Helmsdoerfer shot a 42 on the front nine and cut five strokes when she made her way around the back nine, hitting a 37 to end with a score of 79.
Helmsdoerfer and teammate Kara Brinkmann tied for first place in the field in total birdies, as each Bobcat student-athlete recorded three. Brinkmann tied for the third lowest par-three scoring average (3.00) at the tournament while McKinzie tied for the lowest par-five scoring average (4.50).
Julie Lechner (Powell, Ohio) and Brinkmann (Middletown, Ohio) were Ohio’s next finishers, each tying for 29th place with 82 strokes. Angela Codian (Massillon, Ohio) and Sarah Tranelli (Penfield, N.Y.) were not far behind, tying for 43rd and 47th, respectively. Codian shot a score of 85 while Tranelli ended with an 87.
The Bobcats will next be in action at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships in Nashport, Ohio. Ohio will host this year’s edition of the Championships at Longaberger Golf Club from April 26-28.
