ATHENS, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2010-11 Women's Golf Academic All-MAC team Tuesday, and Ohio's Megan Weaver was selected, while Meryl Weaver and Erin Cahill were named honorable mention. The teams are voted on by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 10 student-athletes were named to the All-MAC team.
Weaver became the first Bobcat women's golfer to be named to the Academic All-MAC team since Kristen Mautz in 2007. A junior with a 3.96 GPA and majoring in Mathematics/Actuarial Science, Weaver finished in the top 10 at the 2011 MAC Championships. She had the best stroke average for the Bobcats this spring with a 78.04 and had a low round of 72 at the Cardinal Classic, where she placed fourth overall. Weaver ended the year with four top-10 finishes and seven top-20 finishes.
Her sister Meryl, a junior with a 3.86 GPA majoring in Integrated Mathematics, finished 13th at the MAC Championships, her best finish of the spring season. Cahill, a senior who has a 3.99 GPA and majored in Accounting and Finance, was the second-best golfer on the team during the spring, averaging a 79.7 score per round for the Bobcats. Her low round of 76 came at the UC Spring Invitational and she finished in the top-10 at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational.
This year's squad was highlighted by Eastern Michigan's Sarah Johnson, the medalist from the 2011 MAC Women's Golf Championship, as well as three members of the Kent State team that advanced to the NCAA Central Regional after the Golden Flashes' 13th consecutive MAC title. Each member of this year's Academic All-MAC team were among the Top 20 in the conference in stroke average per round this season.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
