ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio Women’s Golf tees off its 2012-13 season on Saturday, playing at the two-day Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill. The tournament will take place at the Illinois State University Golf Course.
The tournament will feature a field of 15 teams, five of which—including Ohio—represent the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats will meet up with conference foes Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green and Toledo in addition to non-conference opponents Drake, Illinois Wesleyan, Southern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Oakland, Evansville, Western Illinois, Bradley, South Dakota State and host Illinois State.
Ohio enters the 2012-13 season with a number of changes to its squad. Former seniors Megan and Meryl Weaver have graduated and made way for talented freshmen Angela Codian (Massilon, Ohio) and Lauren McKinzie (Medina, Ohio). The team also returns talented juniors Kara Brinkmann (lowest team stroke average in 2011-12) and Kristen Helmsdoerfer (third lowest team stroke average).
The Bobcats ended last season with a seventh-place finish at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships in Fishers, Ind. Ohio collected a number of postseason awards, as Megan Weaver was named the MAC Sportswoman of the Year, both Weaver sisters were named Academic All-MAC, three Bobcats were named Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention and six Ohio golfers earned their way onto the NGCA Scholar List.
