ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University women's golf team is set to tee off the 2013-14 season on Sunday at the 48th annual Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill. The two-day three-round tournament will be hosted by Illinois State University.
The first of two Sunday rounds will start at 9:30 a.m. EST in a shotgun start format with the final round beginning Monday at the 9:30 a.m. as well.
This year's Redbird Invitational will again be held at the Weibring Golf Club. Built in 1964, the on-campus course recently renamed for ISU alum D.A. Weibring plays home to a number of yearly tournaments ranging from collegiate athletics, high school state tournaments, and youth contests. The women's course record is currently held by LGPA tour player Samantha Richdale with a score of a 66(-6). The par-72 course plays 6,242 yards.
Ohio will face off against 13 other teams in the tournament. Along with Ohio University, the MAC is represented in the tournament with Ball State, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, and Toledo.
The Bobcats are ready to open the 2013 season with a roster that provides head coach Kelly Ovington with a wealth of experience. With the exception of graduated senior Sarah Tranelli (Penfield, N.Y.), the entire 2012-13 roster remains intact.
This year's team is poised for success with the senior leadership of Kara Brinkmann (Middletown, Ohio) and Kristen Helmsdoerfer (Westerville, Ohio). Beyond the seniors, Ohio looks for sophomore Angela Codian (Massilon, Ohio) to build on her outstanding freshman season that earned her Second Team All-MAC back in April. That trio of Bobcats will compete in this week's Redbird Invitational along with junior Julie Lechner (Powell, Ohio) and sophomore Lauren McKenzie (Medina, Ohio).
Last season at the Redbird Invitational, the Bobcats placed 10th out of 15 teams. The `cats shot a combined 963 (322-320-321) at the event. Codian led the team with a 54-hole score of 232 (80-79-73).
