ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio University women's golf team is set to begin play in Port Clinton, Ohio, at the Rocket Classic on Monday. Toledo will host the two-day, 54-hole tournament.
Ohio will play 36 holes on Monday followed by a final 18-hole round on Tuesday. Both days are formatted in a shotgun start with each morning round beginning at 9 a.m.
The tournament field will feature 13 teams, including MAC foes Akron, Bowling Green, Toledo and Western Michigan. Ohio also will be joined by in-state opponents Cleveland State, Dayton and Youngstown State.
Catawba Island Club, a par-72 measuring 5,929 yards, will be the site of this year's tournament. The course is known for its difficult wind conditions due to its location on Lake Erie.
Senior Kristen Helmsdoerfer (Westerville, Ohio) looks to lead the Bobcats with her strong consistent play. She has yet to shoot a round above the 78 mark this season. After posting a top-20 (t-11th) finish at last week's The Preview tournament, she is now ranked 13th in the MAC in scoring average (77.20) among those with less than 10 rounds played.
Senior Kara Brinkmann (Middletown, Ohio) and freshman Hailey Hrynewich (Muskegon, Mich.) will join Helmsdoerfer in Toledo. The duo tied for 22nd place at The Preview on Oct. 7-8.
Sophomores Angela Codian (Massillon, Ohio) and Lauren McKinzie (Medina, Ohio) will also travel to Port Clinton to compete, while Julie Lechner (Powell, Ohio) will round out individual competition for the Cats’. Codian's best finish came in the fall-opening Redbird Invitational when she finished t-9th.
