ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Women's Golf has announced the signings of two stellar student-athletes for the 2012-13 season, the program announced on Wednesday. The Bobcats will be welcoming Angela Codian and Lauren McKinzie to the team beginning next fall.
Angela Codian
Angela Codian is an exceptional talent who has twice been named to the All Northeast Ohio Golf Coaches Association Division One First Team. Following an exceptional 2010 season, she was voted Federal League Player of the Year and Stark County Player of the Year. In addition to all of these impressive individual accolades, she also led her team to a second-place finish at the 2010 state championships.
The 2011 season was her most dominant, as she picked up a an individual title in addition to posting very solid scores. Codian won the 2011 Greater Cleveland Women's Amateur Championship, posting scores of 74 and 73 to beat the second-place competitor by 11 strokes. She also competed on the Taylormade-adidas Collegiate Tour in the summer of 2011, placing in the top ten on three occasions.
Academically, Codian maintains a 3.7 grade-point-average, is a member of the National Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions, the Ambassador's Club, and is a freshman mentor at her high school. Codian will graduate with honors in the spring of 2012.
"I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to represent Ohio University and be a member of its Women's Golf team," Angela Codian said. "I thank Coach Ovington for this opportunity and I look forward to forming new friendships, competing at the next level and experiencing all that the university has to offer."
"She is an outstanding player and is definitely going to be a major contributor to the team," said Head Coach Kelly Ovington. "We're all on the same page as far as where we want this program to go and what we need to do to get there. She is well aware of what needs to happen and is well-equipped to help us get there, both academically and on the golf course."
Lauren McKinzie
Ohio Women's Golf is also very excited to announce the signing of Lauren McKinzie. Set to graduate from Highland High School in the spring of 2012, McKinzie has led the Hornets to three consecutive state golf tournament appearances. Lauren finished her senior season in an impressive fashion, posting a 75 at the OHSAA District Tournament and a 77 in the second round of the OHSAA State Tournament.
Lauren is a four-year First Team All-Suburban League golfer. She has also been named to the All Northeast Ohio First Team three times.
"We are very excited about the addition of Lauren to the Ohio Women's Golf family," Ovington said. "Lauren has a passion for the game that drives her to be an outstanding competitor and hard worker. She will be a terrific addition to the program and university, both on the course and in the classroom."
Ohio Women's Golf finished its fall 2011 season with an impressive fourth-place finish at the Zippy Invitational.
