ATHENS, Ohio – Freshman Dana Dobbie scored the first of her three goals 1:02 into her collegiate career and senior Lynz Keys added three goals to lead Ohio to a 16-4 lacrosse victory over Albany Friday afternoon at Pruitt Field. The contest was the season opener for both teams.

The Bobcats opened a 4-0 lead in the first 14-and-a-half minutes behind a pair of Dobbie goals and single tallies from Keys and Molly Wurdack. After Kim Reny converted a free position shot to put Albany on the board at 16:43, the Bobcats rattled off four more consecutive goals. Dobbie struck a third time at 20:38 to push the lead to 5-1 before three quick tallies made the score 8-1. Keys took an assist from Becky Oxman at 23:24, then Kristen Gombeski found the net just eight seconds later. The third goal came from Oxman at the 24:08 mark, capping the 44-second barrage.

Sarah Spillett cut the Great Danes' halftime deficit to 8-2 with an unassisted goal at 26:40.

Another three-goal scoring spurt in the first 1:52 of the second half kept Ohio in control for the remainder of the contest. Keys completed her hat trick just 59 seconds into the second period before Gombeski added an unassisted tally at 31:25. Melissa Menna scored her first goal of the season 27 seconds later as the Bobcats opened an 11-2 advantage.

Albany scored two of the next three goals to cut Ohio’s lead to 12-4 but never rallied closer. The Great Danes' Alexis DeDomenico and Courtney Hill sandwiched successful attempts around a Courtney Santelli goal during the span from 41:22 to 43:52. But it was the Bobcats who finished strong, adding four more goals over the final five minutes. Oxman and Menna recorded their second goals of the contest, while Caitlin Link and Allison Brennan each found the net for the first time.

The Bobcats opened their season 1-0 for the second time in five years, defeating the same Albany team at a neutral site a year ago. Ohio now looks for its first 2-0 start since restarting the program in 1999 against Duquesne on Sunday at noon. The Great Danes and Dukes will meet tomorrow afternoon at Pruitt Field as part of the round-robin weekend.

Admission is free to all Bobcat home lacrosse games.
