ATHENS, Ohio – Freshman attacker Dana Dobbie provided seven goals to a pair of wins during the Ohio lacrosse team’s opening weekend and claimed the Ohio Realty/GMAC Real Estate Athlete-of-the-Week award, announced Ohio Athletics.

Dobbie, a native of Guelphont, Ontario, Canada, scored three first-half goals before suffering an ankle injury in Friday’s 16-4 rout of Albany. She then followed up her impressive debut with four goals in Sunday’s 11-8 victory over Duquesne.

“She came out on fire and scored the first goal of our season as a freshman,” said Bobcat head coach Kate Brew about Dobbie’s goal just 1:02 into Friday’s contest. “When you watch her play, she just doesn’t look like a freshman. There is absolutely no fear involved and she’s not going to back down to anybody.”

Ohio’s performance over the weekend marked the first time the team has started a season 2-0 since the program returned to varsity status in 1999. Three of Dobbie’s goals on Sunday came after the Dukes had tied the score at 7-7 with just over 17 minutes remaining in the contest. She broke the deadlock at 48:58 and then gave the Bobcats some cushion with a pair of goals 22 seconds apart at 52:42 and 53:04.

“Dana’s goals were huge,” added Brew. “Starting off against Albany, being able to put a ball in the net in the first minute was exactly what we were looking for. Against Duquesne, when we needed goals she put in three straight. As a freshman, that’s amazing.”

Ohio begins a streak of six straight road games with a 1 p.m. contest at North Carolina on Sunday. The next home match for the Bobcats will be at 4 p.m. on April 2 when they host American Lacrosse Conference foe Davidson.

Admission is free to all Ohio home lacrosse games at Peggy Pruitt Field on Shafer Street.
