Lacrosse Defeats Niagara, Extends Winning Streak To Six
Athens, Ohio (April 18) - The Ohio lacrosse team extended its winning streak to six games, defeating Niagara (4-9) 19-5 at Peggy Pruitt Field. At 7-6, this marks the first time in their three-year history that they have been above .500. The 14 goal margin of victory ties the team high of last year’s 18-4 win over St. Bonaventure.
The Purple Eagles got on the board first on a goal by Laurie Haefner at 27:46. Ohio would respond by scoring the next three goals. After Lindsey Hart (Vineland, Ont.) tied the score at one, Ashley Bauer (Shaker Heights) and Becky Oxman (Bryn Mawr, Pa) scored 19 seconds apart. Niagara would cut the lead to 3-2 at the 19:20 on Haefner’s second goal but the Bobcats would score nine unanswered goals, giving them a 12-2 halftime lead. Melissa Menna (Downingtown, Pa.) started the barrage at 16:34 and Alyssa Trocher (Ellicot City, Md.), her third of the game, ended the half with a goal at 1:20. In between that, Oxman and Hart each notched a pair, and Lynz Keys (Whitby, Ont.) scored the other.
The Bobcats continued to attack in the second half when Bauer added her second of the game at 26:50 and Trocher her fourth at 24:49 on a free position shot. Niagara’s Belinda Patterson tallied her first of two goals at 22:08. That did not stop the Bobcats as they scored five more. Trocher scored her fifth, Oxman and Hart their fourth and Emily Hemmelgarn (Worthington) her first career goal to close out the Ohio’s scoring. Hart added four assists giving her eight points on the day, while Trocher had two assists, giving her seven points.
Niagra’ Patterson and Haefner scored the last two goals of the game. Jennifer Cassidy (Whitby, Ont.) made eight saves for the Bobcats, while Kara Grooms stopped 11 for the Purple Eagles.
