Second-Half Surge Leads 10th-ranked Penn State Past Ohio Lacrosse

    STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State opened the second half with three quick goals to break a 5-5 tie and lead the 10th-ranked Nittany Lions to a 17-8 American Lacrosse Conference victory over Ohio Sunday afternoon.

    Dana Dobbie scored three goals and added an assist while Frannie Sullivan tallied two goals and a pair of assists.

    Dobbie opened the scoring 3:24 into the contest after taking an assist from Sullivan, but Penn State followed goals 14 seconds apart -- at 9:03 and 9:17 -- to take a 2-1 lead. The run extened to four with goals at the 15:49 and 11:48 marks. .

    The Dobbie-Sullivan connection struck again with 8:05 left in the first half to start at 3-0 run to even the game at four. Caitlin Link convered a free position shot with 7:10 left and Kari Frasick found the net unassisted at the 5:12 mark.

    Penn State went back up one with a goal at the 25:15 mark, but Sullivan tied the game just 29 seconds before intermission on a pass from Dobbie. The Nittany Lions broke the tie 46 seconds into the second half, then added goals with 28:31 and 24:23 to play for an 8-5 lead.

    Kristen Gombeski cut the deficit to two with a goal at 21:44, but PSU answered with four straight to surge ahead. Sullivan and Dobbie scored back-to-back with 12:28 and 10:57 remaining to make the score 12-8, but the Lions ended the game with the last five goals for the final difference.

    Penn State's Shari Maslin led all scorers with five goals, while Kristen Burke added four goals.

    The Bobcats wrap up their home schedule Saturday when it hosts first-year program Oregon. The start time is noon.
