ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Soccer began the 2012 season on Sunday afternoon, defeating visiting Eastern Kentucky by a final score of 2-0 in an exhibition contest. The Bobcats were paced by second-half goals from Liz Finley and Cathryn Rogers and a solid goalkeeping combination by Rachel Fryan and Nicole Amari.
Despite being outshot by an 8-6 margin, the Bobcats were very opportunistic with their chances throughout the match. Rogers (Etobicoke, Ontario) was an offensive force to be reckoned with all game, firing three total shots, all of which were on target. Ohio spread the ball out very well during the final 20 minutes of the match, collecting four assists on its two goals.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half, with Eastern Kentucky holding a 5-3 edge in total shots. Ohio did manage to muster the lone shot on goal in the frame when Rogers put a good look on target during the middle of the half. Eastern Kentucky's Erika Wolfer was in a good position for the shot, however, and collected it with relative ease.
Following a strong spell of possession, Ohio was able to break the deadlock in the 74th minute when Finley (Mason, Ohio) headed a shot just inside the near post and past the outstretched goalkeeper's arms. A corner by Veronica Rock (North Royalton, Ohio) was whipped in nicely and found transfer student Maggie Murnane (Libertyville, Ind.). Murnane smartly headed the ball right to Finley, who was able to finish the chance by nodding her shot on frame.
Just six minutes later, the Bobcats were able to put the match out of reach. Sasha Haverchak (Akron, Ohio) and Natalie Bechtel (Westlake, Ohio) combined two very nice passes to find Rogers standing alone near the EKU penalty spot. With defenders approaching from multiple sides, Rogers deftly struck it first-time, just putting it past substitute goalkeeper Samm Melton to put her side up 2-0.
The Bobcats will next be in action on Friday, Aug. 17 when they open the regular season at Wright State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
