YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio University women’s soccer team (4-2-1) won its fourth-straight game Friday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Youngstown State (1-5-1) at the Penguins’ Farmers National Bank Field.

The Bobcats were outshot 4-2 in the first half and entered intermission tied at zero, but Ohio exploded with 10 shots in the second half and put a goal on the board midway through the frame when junior Liz Finley (Mason, Ohio) notched a score for the 'Cats.

“I think an exciting part of today was that we had another player score her first goal of the season,” head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “We’ve had seven goal scorers this season and it’s fantastic that we’re spreading the offense around.”

Senior goalkeeper Mattie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio) picked up her first shutout of the season and the 17th of her Ohio career against the Penguins, making five saves in a full 90 minutes of action. Liston now has a .750 save percentage and 1.05 goals against average on the year.

“I give credit to Mattie and the five backs that played today, as well as the rest of the team” Rodgers said. “Defending is a team effort and we want to defend with 11 players. We put forward a great team effort to earn the shutout today.”

The Penguins were aggressive early, earning a pair of corner kicks in the contest’s second minute, but could not manage a shot during the sequence. The Bobcats’ first scoring opportunity came at 13’, when Finley fired a shot at the YSU goal that was saved by goaltender Katie Montgomery.

Liston deflected a pair of Youngstown opportunities in the 14th minute, but the Penguins threatened again at 19’ with a shot (wide) and a corner.

The Bobcats could not manufacture a shot on goal for the next 30 minutes of action and Youngstown’s only opportunity was a header that deflected off the post, which sent the teams into the half knotted at zero.

Ohio’s offense picked up significantly to start the second half, as freshman Alexis Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) played a nice header three minutes into the period that was saved by Montgomery. A corner from junior Tonya Frasik (Lebanon, Ohio) at 56’ led to a shot from sophomore Holly Harris (Batavia, Ohio) and another shot from Milesky went wide at 61’.

Another corner paid the ultimate dividend for Ohio in the 65th minute, as Frasik lobbed a cross into the attack box that was taken and deposited into the goal by Finley for her first score of the season.

The Penguins stormed back in the 70th minute with a pair of shots on goal, but Liston made another strong pair of saves to preserve the Ohio lead. Liston rejected another YSU attempt at 74'.

Ohio answered back in the 75th minute with a header from freshman Allison Cislo (Crownsville, Md.) that was saved by Montgomery, then grabbed a corner at 76’.

The ‘Cats stayed aggressive with two more shots in the 78th and 80th minutes and put a shot on goal at 85’ after Frasik rifled a shot into the hands of Montgomery. Ohio hung on from there to clinch the one-goal victory.

Frasik led all Bobcats with a game-high five shots against the Penguins.

The Bobcats return to action next Friday (Sept. 20) with a match at Cleveland State. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
