OXFORD, Ohio – The Ohio University women’s soccer team (5-3-3, 1-1-1 MAC) used a superb defensive effort in goal to earn a 1-1 tie against MAC preseason favorite Miami (4-6-1, 1-1-1 MAC) Friday night at the Redhawks' Soccer Field.

Senior goalkeeper Mattie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio) made a season-high 10 saves in goal for the Bobcats, including three in the overtime sessions to help Ohio earn its first point in Oxford since 2008.

Her superior performance in goal aided the Bobcats in overcoming disadvantages in shots (22-11) and shots on goal (11-4). Ohio again won the corner battle at Miami, holding a 7-6 advantage.

Freshman Alexis Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) posted the Ohio goal in the contest in the first half to pace the Bobcat offense while sophomore Holly Harris (Batavia, Ohio) notched a team-high four shots in the match.

"Today was a decent result for us on the road against last year's MAC champion and the preseason pick to win the conference," head coach Aaron Rodgers said. "There was certainly progress for us. We don't go into any games to tie. We go into games to win, but we made some good steps today to grind out a result and grow as a team."

Miami earned the game’s first scoring opportunity in the 11th minute, when Katy Dolesh headed a ball at the goal that was deflected by Liston.

Ohio then grabbed a corner at 13’ and junior Annie Beard (Mason, Ohio) took the cross and rifled a shot high of the goal. Just four minutes later, the Bobcats struck first, when Milesky took possession outside the penalty area and fired a shot cross-field into the upper 90 of the goal. Her third score of the season gave the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

The RedHawks again threatened in the 23rd minute, but another RedHawk shot was denied after another superb save from Liston. The skilled Ohio goalkeeper added to her team-record save total at 35’, as Liston again knocked back an attempt from Miami’s Jenna Weiner.

But Miami finally beat Liston in the 36th minute, as the RedHawks notched the equalizer after Jess Bronke’s shot found the back of the net.

The Bobcats threatened again at 39’, as freshman Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.) registered a shot on goal that was saved by Miami’s Allison Norenberg. The ‘Cats and Redhawks entered the half tied, 1-1.

Ohio opened the second half aggressively with shots in the 48th and 52nd minutes, then stepped up its defensive effort, as Liston made her fourth save of the contest at 65’ to keep the score knotted at one. The ‘Cats grabbed a corner at 69’ which led to a shot by Beard that went wide.

Miami put together a series of offensive opportunities in the final 15 minutes of regulation but could not score, sending the contest into overtime.

Harris rifled a shot at the net that was saved by Norenberg two minutes into the overtime session, then Liston countered with a save in the 98th minute, sending the game into a second extra session.

Mattie made two saves in the first two minutes of the second extra session and that’s all Ohio would need to preserve the tie.

The Bobcats return to action next Sunday at 1 p.m. with a trip to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State.
