Bobcats Drop Second MAC Contest of 2007 Season
Oct. 19, 2007
ATHENS, Ohio - Northern Illinois needed just more than seven minutes to score but the Bobcats could not find the back of the net for the full 90 minutes and lost to the Huskies 1-0 on a chilly Friday evening. The loss was only the second in conference play for Ohio (4-7-3, 4-2-1 MAC) who were also shutout by Ball State while Northern Illinois (6-4-3, 3-3-1 MAC) evened its record in MAC competition. Karen Enockson scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season for the Huskies on their first shot attempt of the game. NIU's Lisa Maier streaked down the far side of the field and fed a ball into the middle just a few feet in front of Enockson. That was as close as the senior from St. Charles, Ill., needed it and she collected the pass, took a few dribbles and fired a shot to the near post, sneaking the ball just past Ohio keeper Jess MacLean. Ohio had plenty of chances to tie the game but NIU keeper Lindsey Curnock recorded the 11th shutout of her career, and second clean sheet in as many games. Curnock saved five Ohio shot attempts while MacLean grabbed three saves. The Bobcats kept the pressure on Northern Illinois throughout the game, racking up eight corner kicks in the contest but the Bobcats' seven shot attempts, five on goal, could not get past Curnock. The Huskies nearly had another goal, late in the second half, when a pass back to MacLean stalled on the turf and a Northern Illinois forward took a shot that hit the inside of the far post and slowly rolled all the way across the front of the net before creeping out of bounds inches away from the near post. Sarah Brown (North Royalton) made her second start of the season on the back line for the Bobcats and was awarded a yellow card in the 28th minute. The physical contest saw 21 total fouls called, 17 whistles against the Huskies. Northern Illinois' Micaela Damas was also issued a yellow card in the 75th minute. The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Western Michigan. Ohio will celebrate senior day against the Broncos so be sure to get to Chessa Field early. ---------------------- Joe Waltasti is the women's soccer contact for the Ohio media relations office.
